“Giftedness is not what you do or how hard you work. It is who you are. You think differently. You experience life intensely. You care about injustice. You seek meaning. You appreciate and strive for the exquisite. You are painfully sensitive. You are extremely complex. You cherish integrity. Your truth-telling has gotten you in trouble. Should 98% of the population find you odd, seek the company of those who love you just the way you are. You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. You are utterly fascinating. Trust yourself!”

Post It Holders for Back to School

Post It Holders for Back to School

Guess what I got?

I finally took the plunge and bought a smartphone!  I am currently sitting here learning how to use this little beauty!  Right now I am listening to music on Siren (Macklemore and Ryan: Same Love~Awesome song!  Love that Mary Lambert).  I am sure it will take me weeks to learn how to use all the features but so far I think I am going to LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Anyhow, one of the first things I did was sign up for Instagram and then snap some photos!  I have to admit I am NOT a good photographer at all.  I am working on it though.  I love that I can send my photos directly to Picasa and then use them on the blog!  I plan to take a lot of pictures in my classroom again this year.  I hope the phone comes in handy for this...I don't always have my Canon with me when I need it.

So back to the photos I took this morning.  Here is what I have made for my colleagues at school as a back to school present.

In June I had purchased some photo holders with the intent of making post-it note holders as a thank you gift for some of the teachers on staff. Well, life got in the way, and I didn't make them. Fast forward to last Monday.  I was prepping my classroom for next Tuesday, when low and behold, I came across the frames and the post-its I had bought.  I decided I would give a sticky note holder to each of my colleagues as a little back to school gift.

I realized that I would need more frames, so I headed out to my nearest dollar store and purchased more frames, sticky notes, double faced tape and some scrapbook decorations.  The store didn't have the same sized frames as I had purchased back in June, but hey, go with the flow right?  I decided to personalize the frames for each staff member using the scrapbooking decorations I had purchased.  I think they are super cute and turned out great.  What do you think?

I apologize that the pictures are not high quality. I am still getting the hang of the camera on the phone.

Do you do anything for your colleagues for back to school?

    1. Thanks for the comment Karen! I really wanted to do something for everyone! I make survival kits for my students, something for my student teacher, and wanted to do something for the staff too! I am known for it, so despite my issues this summer, I am glad I did it! Hope you are ready to go back, or if you have you are having a great year back!

  2. Little back-to-school gifts help cheer everyone up, especially after sitting through hours of in-service. This year I collected inexpensive items and baskets throughout the summer-small bottles of Tylenol, hard candy, pens, sticky notes, etc. The afternoon before our last in-service day, I placed the baskets on each teacher's desk as a surprise for the next morning. All of the teachers in my department are female, so I added a pink magic wand to each basket. Now we all will be reminded that we are queens of our realm.

    1. I love your idea! So smart, it reminds me of the survival kits I make for my student teachers. The tylenol is brilliant! We don't do inservicing her in Ontario at all, we go straight back to work. Anything we do before the first day is on our own momentum! I LOVE the idea of the pink magic wand...I want one, and a crown to go with it! Have a wonderful long weekend!

  3. I LOVE my smart phone, too! I just got one at the beginning of this summer. It did take me weeks to figure out the ins and outs, but eventually I realized that my phone is all the things I do on the computer, wrapped up in a nice tidy, pocket-sized box. Having Netflix and Kindle on one device is too awesome!

I just got an Instagram account, too. You can find me at blueunicorn1974.

Oh, one thing I am LOVING about my phone is snapping pictures of the notes we take in class and posting them to my classroom blog. Students are able to see what they missed if they were absent, or parents can help students with concepts they are having a tough time with.

    1. The idea of taking pictures of notes is really smart Karen! I am going to have to try to remember. I took a LOT of pictures of my class last year, and I am glad I did. I like documenting the work we have done. I need to do a better job of sharing them with the students and their parents though. I think I added you on instagram but in case I didn't, I am ...wait for it...teachingisagift! Bet you are shocked. Hope you are enjoying the long weekend with a good book. I saw the pics you posted of the girls going off to grandmas..hope you got a rest!

    2. We were all heading to my mom's house for our weekly dinner and games. It is a great way to remember to slow down for a little bit and get away from the feeling that I need to be productive.

I got your follow on Instagram. I sent you a request to follow back!

And, oh, yes... I AM enjoying a good book this weekend. It was one I got for free on my Kindle, but it is hard to put down.

  4. Very cute! I made some earlier in the summer. I think next time I will only make them for staff and not the kids. The kids are already destroying mine.

  5. Alison, I love it when someone tells me they tried it too! I am really not crafty per se, so for me to attempt to do this was a big deal. I am impressed you made them for students, I would not have thought of that! You are very generous. Thanks for commenting. Hope you are having a great long weekend!

  6. You're so sweet Sidney! Your friends will love them! I haven't jumped on the Instagram bandwagon yet, but I need too! My high school son is always teasing me that he has an account with so many followers and I don't! LOL! My contract is up and my husband wants me to get the iPhone 5-so many new things to learn with new technology! Hard to keep up right?
